Aldis is a Morse code signalling app published by timetoady. This policy explains what data the app handles and where it lives. The short version: it collects nothing, and it cannot send anything anywhere — Aldis does not request Android’s internet permission, so it has no ability to reach a server, ours or anyone else’s.
Data stored on your device only
Aldis saves the following in its own private app storage. It never leaves your device, and we cannot see it:
- Messages you save in the translator — the title and the text you typed
- Your Learn Morse progress: which lessons you have completed, your best accuracy, and when you last opened each one
- Settings: speed (WPM), volume, which outputs are switched on (screen, torch, audio, vibration), soft-flash mode, theme and accent colour, and whether you have acknowledged the photosensitivity warning
That is the whole list. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its data in Android settings, deletes all of it.
If you have Android’s own backup switched on for your device, that private storage is included in the backup Android makes to your Google account, the same way it is for other apps. That copy belongs to you and your Google account; it is covered by Google’s privacy policy, and we have no access to it. Turning off backup for Aldis in Android settings stops it.
The camera decoder, and exactly what it does with the picture
Aldis can read a flashing Morse light — another phone’s torch, a signal lamp — and turn it back into text. To do that it asks for the camera permission, and only when you open the Camera Decoder screen. If you never open that screen, the app never asks.
While the decoder is running, Aldis looks at the back camera’s live frames and measures one number per frame: the average brightness of a small square in the middle of the view. That number, and the frame’s timestamp, are all the decoder keeps. Each frame itself is released immediately after it is measured and is never saved, copied, or held on to.
Concretely, Aldis does not:
- Record video or take photos
- Write any image to storage, the gallery, or anywhere else
- Run face detection, object recognition, text recognition, or any other analysis of what is in the picture
- Send a frame, or anything derived from one, off your device — it has no network access to send it over
The preview you see on screen while decoding is live and unrecorded; it exists so you can aim the phone. The decoded text stays on the screen until you clear it or leave, and is saved only if you choose to save it as a message.
Permissions
- Camera — to decode a flashing Morse light, as described above. Requested only when you open the Camera Decoder.
- Vibrate — to send Morse as vibration.
That is the complete list. In particular, Aldis does not request internet access, and does not request the microphone, location, contacts, files, or photos.
What the app does not do
- No advertising, and no advertising libraries
- No analytics, tracking, crash reporting or telemetry of any kind
- No accounts, no sign-in, no email address, no profile
- No in-app purchases
- No network access at all, so there is no server that could hold your data
- No collection of contacts, photos, files, location, microphone audio, or any other device content
Children
The app collects nothing from anyone, of any age, so there is nothing it could collect from a child. There is no chat, no sharing, and no way to reach another person through it — the only thing Aldis sends is light, sound and vibration, into the room you are standing in.
Photosensitivity
Aldis flashes the screen and the torch as part of normal use. Before the first full-intensity screen flash it shows a one-time warning and offers a soft-flash mode, which you can also switch on at any time in Settings. This is a safety note rather than a privacy one, but it is the one thing about the app worth knowing before you use it.
Data security
There is nothing in transit to secure, because nothing is transmitted. On-device data sits in the app’s private storage, which other apps cannot read.
Changes
We will update this page when anything in this policy changes, and update the date at the top.
